5 Tips for the Working Mom, from a Working Mom
I’ve always felt like entrepreneurship was in my blood.
Having grown up in a family that owned their own business, I saw firsthand how hard work and determination can help better the lives of you, your family, and of course those in business with you. There’s a special feeling that comes with helping others through your career path, and it’s one I’ve always known I wanted to keep in my life, hence the birth of Holistic Umbrella.
But when the birth of my actual baby came—Hudson in 2019—I knew I needed to find a balance that would allow me to be the best mom I could possibly be, as well as keep the entrepreneurial part of my identity I had been nurturing for the previous 10 years. I read what felt like every baby book, listened to every podcast, and Googled every suggestion, and to be honest, nothing could have prepared me for the balancing act that was to come.
What I have figured out, however, is that there is no one-size-fits-all model for the working mom.
What works for someone else might not work for you. But, there’s certainly an understanding—an unspoken bond—between working mothers. We share what works for us in hopes that it might help our friends in need. That being said, here are five tips that have worked for me for balancing my two loves; Hudson and Holistic Umbrella.
Don’t sweat the small stuff! No one is judging you but yourself. Only you know what you and your family are going through, and you know you’re trying your best so that is all that matters.
Focus on skincare and forget the makeup—unless it’s a concealer which you should keep in your purse. Skincare is such a great way to practice self-care in the morning or evening, and it won’t start to fade or look yucky as the day goes on like makeup might. Makeup will come and go but your skin is forever!
Don’t be afraid to ask for help or even hire help. Use every tool in your toolbox for success. If hiring help is something you can afford to do, then absolutely do it to take some stress off your plate. If it’s not in the cards for you right now, ask someone in your support system to help you out. You are loved and there are people who will help you no matter what; you’re not doing this alone!
Put the phone away when you’re spending time with your kiddo. I know it’s not easy, but it’s really the only “free time” you get. Work time is work time, and family time is family time. It’s important your child knows they come first, and that means undivided attention when possible.
This is a hard one for me but is so important: Rest when baby rests and go to bed when baby goes to bed. Sleep is everything for an overactive mommy.
Now, if anyone has any tips on how to manage your own business with kiddos please let me know. Baby Girl is due this August 2021 and I’m going to need all the help I can get!
